On Liverpool, Newcastle & Déjà Vu in Gameweek 1

GW1 this year felt very much like GW1 of last season. We were lucky to win that night, we are lucky to win a point today.

We had Dominik Szoboszlai starting in a midfield 2, a clear plan to accommodate both him & Florian Wirtz in the playing 11. We had a very similar situation where we overloaded their backline, failed to complete the attacking phase of play (shot), lost the ball and conceded on a counter attack. It was Antoine Semenyo then, Anthony Elanga now.

Our structure looks daft when this happens (poor rest defence, no protection, lacking No. 6, etc.), but it’s just one bit of poor decision making: when to shoot & when to make that extra pass (and in the process possibly lose it). This was even pointed out by Arne Slot in one of his interviews with Jamie Carragher last season, so you can forgive me if it’s all a bit of a Déjà Vu.

Hopefully much better next weekend against Nottingham Forest.
